Background of the study
Community health workers (CHWs) are the backbone of primary healthcare delivery, particularly in areas with limited access to formal medical facilities. In Ijebu North Local Government Area, CHWs play a critical role in promoting maternal and child health through activities such as health education, immunization support, and basic clinical care. Their close interactions with community members help bridge the gap between health facilities and the population, leading to improved health outcomes (Olaitan, 2023). Studies have shown that CHWs can significantly reduce maternal and child morbidity and mortality by facilitating early detection and timely referral of health issues (Balogun, 2024). Moreover, the trust and rapport they build within communities enhance the effectiveness of health interventions, making them indispensable in resource-constrained settings (Ajayi, 2025). This study examines the role and impact of CHWs in Ijebu North, aiming to provide insights for strengthening community-based healthcare delivery.
Statement of the problem
Despite the recognized benefits of community health workers, maternal and child health outcomes in Ijebu North remain suboptimal due to challenges such as inadequate training, resource constraints, and limited community engagement. These challenges diminish the potential impact of CHWs, highlighting the need for an in-depth analysis of their roles and the obstacles they face (Olaitan, 2023).
Objectives of the study:
To assess the impact of CHWs on maternal and child health outcomes.
To identify the challenges faced by CHWs in the region.
To recommend strategies to enhance the effectiveness of community health interventions.
Research questions:
How do CHWs contribute to improving maternal and child health?
What challenges limit the effectiveness of CHWs in Ijebu North?
What strategies can enhance CHW performance and impact?
Research Hypotheses:
CHWs significantly improve maternal and child health outcomes.
Inadequate resources hinder CHW effectiveness.
Enhanced support and training can improve CHW performance.
Significance of the study
This study provides essential insights for health policymakers and practitioners, highlighting the critical role of community health workers in improving maternal and child health. The findings will support the development of strategies to enhance CHW training and resource allocation, thereby strengthening community-based healthcare delivery in Ijebu North.
Scope and limitations of the study:
Limited to the role of community health workers in improving maternal and child health in Ijebu North Local Government Area, Ogun State.
Definitions of terms:
Community Health Workers: Lay health personnel who provide basic health services.
Maternal Health: Health services related to pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care.
